The Parasitology and Mycology Laboratory boasts
more than 35 years experience in research on the leishmaniases.
Between 1955 and 1991 important eco-epidemiological studies on the
leishmaniases were directed by Professor J.-A. Rioux, in many foci
in the Mediterranean basin. This work provided the foundation for
the Leishmania collection, which was started
in 1975, and for internationally recognised expertise in the use
of biochemical methods for the identification of Leishmania.
This in turn has permitted (since 1981) numerous taxonomic studies
and eco-epidemiological studies of natural foci.
Since 1991 Professor J.P. Dedet has led a reorientation of the research
towards molecular biology and the genetics of Leishmania.
Following recognition as a candidate CNRS team in
1997, the laboratory was confirmed as a Joint Research Unit
of the CNRS and University of Montpellier 1 in 1999, renewed
in 2003 as UMR 5093: Molecular Biology and Genomics of Parasitic
Protozoa. |

The unit has a staff of 13: 2 tenured CNRS researchfellows,
one CNRS technical assistant, and 4 teacher / researchers.
The activity of the unit is mainly geared towards the
molecular biology and functional genomics of Leishmania (Genome
team lead by M. Pages). The second main thrust is epidemiology
using molecular tools, and the identification and taxonomy of Leishmania
(Molecular epidemiology team, led by J.P. Dedet).
